Albany Law Alumni Series – Elder Law

The National Alumni Association (NAA) and the Career Center held another career education luncheon featuring Albany Law alumni who practice Elder Law. JulieAnn Calareso (class of '03) from Burke & Casserly; Pam Perry (class of ’08) from Cioffi, Slezak, Wildgrube; and Martin Finn (class of ’83) of Lavelle & Finn were on-campus to share their career insights and guidance in Elder Law. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to meet local attorneys in the field and learn more about this diverse practice area.
The program was moderated by Rose Mary Bailly, Esq., Executive Director, NYS Law Revision Commission.

Federal Government: Where the Jobs Are Program

According to a government-wide survey the federal government needs to hire more than 270,000 workers for "mission-critical" jobs over the next three years.
On Nov. 5, 2009, via videoconference, alumni spoke on how to find a jobs at the federal level, what you can be doing now to put yourself in the best possible position, and hiring timeframes.

New Jersey Judiciary

On September 15, 2009, having just finished his clerkship with a New Jersey Judge, Cory Kestner '08 discussed how his clerkship helped him get his next position. He also gave students an inside track on the New Jersey Judiciary.
There are 480 Statewide clerkship openings and membership to the New Jersey Bar and NJ residency are NOT requirements.

This program offers Albany Law School students a unique opportunity to spend one full semester working under the supervision of a government lawyer in either Washington, D.C. or Albany, NY. Experience government lawyering in a "real-life" laboratory working side-by-side with lawmakers, policymakers, and decision makers.

On August 19, 2008 at 12pm in the Career Center, Professor Deborah Kearns '02 discussed and demonstrated interviewing strategies for large law firms and how the New York City job market works. Before returning to the Albany area, Professor Kearns spent time as both a summer associate and associate for White & Case in New York City.
In addition, members of the Class of 2009 who interviewed through the off-campus programs last year were present to answer questions.

U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia presents: Judicial Clerkships: The springboard to your career!

On Monday, August 18, 2008 at 1:00 pm in the Career Center, Michael Garcia ’89, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, discussed how a judicial clerkship can change the course of your law career.
In addition to his work at the US Attorney’s Office, Mr. Garcia has:
- Served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement.
- Served as Acting Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) where he led the transition of that agency into the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Where did it all begin?
... As a Judicial Clerk for Chief Judge Judith Kaye at the New York State Court of Appeals.
