The National Alumni Association (NAA) and the Career Center held another career education luncheon featuring Albany Law alumni who practice Elder Law. JulieAnn Calareso (class of '03) from Burke & Casserly; Pam Perry (class of ’08) from Cioffi, Slezak, Wildgrube; and Martin Finn (class of ’83) of Lavelle & Finn were on-campus to share their career insights and guidance in Elder Law. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to meet local attorneys in the field and learn more about this diverse practice area.

The program was moderated by Rose Mary Bailly, Esq., Executive Director, NYS Law Revision Commission.

Santa Clara University School of Law was in the Career Center on February 9, 2010 to discuss summer study abroad opportunities in 12 countries, and international internships in 21 countries. They talked about how you can travel abroad to study human rights, international business, intellectual property, comparative law, and so much more!

On Nov. 18, 2009, the National Alumni Association and the Career Center hosted Scott Crisafulli (class of '93) from the Department of Environmental Conservation. Mr. Crisafulli discussed his role with the DEC, his passion for environmental law, and how students can pursue their legal careers in this field.

According to a government-wide survey the federal government needs to hire more than 270,000 workers for "mission-critical" jobs over the next three years.

On Nov. 5, 2009, via videoconference, alumni spoke on how to find a jobs at the federal level, what you can be doing now to put yourself in the best possible position, and hiring timeframes.

There are 480 Statewide clerkship openings and membership to the New Jersey Bar and NJ residency are NOT requirements.

Professor Nancy Maurer was in the Career Center on September 2 discussing the Semester in Government Program.

This program offers Albany Law School students a unique opportunity to spend one full semester working under the supervision of a government lawyer in either Washington, D.C. or Albany, NY. Experience government lawyering in a "real-life" laboratory working side-by-side with lawmakers, policymakers, and decision makers.

The panelists, some of whom are alumni of the MS program, spoke about their education and experiences and offered the current MS students a look at possible career paths for after graduation.

Professor Nancy Maurer, Director of the Field Placement Clinic for the Albany Law Clinic & Justice Center, and Professor Bob Batson, Lawyer in Residence for the Government Law Center were in the Career Center on April 8, 2009 to discuss the Summer Field Placement Program and the Summer in Government Program.

Both are wonderful opportunities for current 1Ls and 2Ls to gain substantive legal experience while earning academic credit.

On Monday, August 18, 2008 at 1:00 pm in the Career Center, Michael Garcia ’89, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, discussed how a judicial clerkship can change the course of your law career.

In addition to his work at the US Attorney’s Office, Mr. Garcia has:

• Served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement.
• Served as Acting Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) where he led the transition of that agency into the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Where did it all begin?
... As a Judicial Clerk for Chief Judge Judith Kaye at the New York State Court of Appeals.
